Media Appearances

On Alison's site Dykes to Watch Out For she keeps an up to date list on all of the events she attends as well as her book tour info. Some of her more major stops this year have included Comic-Con and TCAF right here in Toronto. A full list can be viewed here. She primarily stop at bookstores and libraries for her tour, and also seems to attend a lot of literary events and award shows.

Here is a link to a video of Alison being interviewed by her co-teacher Hillary Chute.

  1. One of my goals in life, once we're out of school and graduated, is to see some of my favourite writers on book tours. As it happens, Alison Bechdel is definitely one of the top on my list! And it's great that you posted a link to her a list of locations that she's visited/will be visiting in the future; in any case, I'll have to see her at TCAF, it seems. I'm so glad that although Bechdel isn't Canadian, she'll be able to make an appearance at one of the most renowned comic book festivals in North America!

That said, I also really enjoyed the video you posted. It's short, sweet, and illustrates (literally) Bechdel's greatest passions and delves into her love of art and psychoanalysis. I'll have to pick up a copy of the graphic novel and buy it soon. As a side note, I find it interesting that Bechdel tends to use one tone of colour for each of her books. Fun Home was accentuated with blues, and Are You My Mother? uses reds.

Surprisingly, I first heard about Alison Bechdel through a series of videos on YouTube called Feminist Frequency, which dabbles on the presence of women in pop culture. The particular video that was featured was called "The Bechdel Test", named, of course, after Alison Bechdel and her comic, Dykes To Watch Out For. It's a rather interesting video, check it out here!

  2. Yea, I was actually pretty surprised that she visited TCAF! I had no idea. Hopefully you can catch her next year :D

Her method really stands out against other comic artists, you can really clearly tell that it's 'bechdel' work. I hadn't caught the red/blue difference, it's interesting that she chose to do that, I wonder if it represents her feelings towards each.

Ah I actually just posted about the Bechdel Test! There is a website that rates modern movies to see if they pass here! Check it out! They even have stuff as recent as Wreck-It Ralph ;D WHICH PASSES BTW. *Woo, go disney*
